If you’ve spent time near the water, you know the healing benefits it can bestow. From fitness pursuits to watching wildlife to simply enjoying the waves, the seashore provides a range of activities to please everyone.

Residents of Pacific Grove can take advantage of proximity to the beach and all that it offers. Here are a few of our favorite things to do in and near the water.

Visit the Aquarium

The Monterey Bay Aquarium, just a short drive from Pacific Grove, offers a variety of exhibits featuring the many creatures that live in the ocean. Visitors can learn about the giant Pacific octopus, which has a mysterious personality and the ability to solve mazes and quickly scoot across the exhibit.

Open Sea, the aquarium’s largest exhibit, provides an up-close look at marine life including sharks, tuna, sea turtles, puffins, jellyfish and more. Meanwhile, the Mission to the Deep exhibit offers a “virtual dive” that takes you into the depths of the ocean with a 360-degree-view of underwater life.

The aquarium is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on most days. If you’re there early, you can catch special events like feeding of the penguins and sea otters at 10:30 a.m.

Go Fishing

If you love fishing, you’ll find plenty of opportunities in Monterey Bay and the surrounding waters. Sport fishing is one of the most-popular activities for visitors to the area.

You’ll find plenty of great spots, either out on the water or on the banks of the Carmel River, to catch fish like albacore, trout, bass, salmon and halibut. If you plan to pole fish, be sure to get the proper license first. Chartered trips for deep-sea fishing also are available.

Spend Time at the Beach

At the seashore, sandy beaches and crashing waves typically serve as the main attractions. The beach provides a variety of activities appealing to people of all ages and activity levels.

If you enjoy being active, you can choose from numerous options for getting in your daily movement on the beach. Consider a long walk or run along the shore, or enjoy a bike ride. For those who love the water, swimming in the ocean is often a favorite pastime.

Surfing and kayaking are also available for those who like to get a little more adventurous. From any vantage on the shore, you’re likely to spot sea life such as otters, dolphins and whales; however, you can get an even better look from a kayak, surfboard or paddle board.

If you enjoy taking it easy, you can get some sun as you read a book while lounging on the beach, or you can simply watch the waves and the people pass by. If you’re with children or teens, you may enjoy building sand castles or playing games like volleyball, touch football or badminton. Of course, everyone loves seeing the sun set over the ocean.

Hit the Links

For golf lovers, the Pacific Grove area offers opportunities to play 18 holes in a beautiful beach setting. At Pacific Grove Golf Links, you can enjoy the views of the Pacific Ocean and Point Pinos as you play.

The 75-year-old course offers a fun and affordable — but challenging — round of golf and has gained national recognition for its design. Whether you’re an experienced player or are just taking up the game, you’ll enjoy the scenic ocean vistas and sea breezes as you play.
