As you explore care options for yourself or a family member, there are many things to consider. Senior living communities offer various levels of care to fit each individuals’ needs. If you are thinking about moving to an assisted living community, it’s important to understand what to expect. At Forest Hill, we are here as a resource to help you make the best decision to fit your needs. Find frequently asked questions about assisted living communities below.

Do I have to need assistance to live in an assisted living facility?

No. It’s very common for couples to move into assisted living when one partner needs help with daily activities, like bathing or medications, and the other needs no help at all. It’s also common for aging adults to move into assisted living before they need help with personal cares or treatments simply because they aren’t interested in taking care of a yard or a home anymore. Keep in mind, however, that your medical needs (or lack of medical needs, more specifically) can affect coverage of your expenses.

Can I bring my own furniture and belongings?

Yes. Most units are unfurnished, allowing you to bring your own furniture, decorations and belongings to make your assisted living house or apartment feel like home. You can decorate your apartment however you choose and bring the furniture you love the most so you’re both comfortable and in familiar surroundings.

How much does assisted living cost?

The cost of assisted living varies depending on where you live, what kind of a home or apartment you choose, how much assistance you require, and which amenities or services you select, like dining options and gym membership. Generally speaking, community members pay a monthly fee ranging from $2,500 – $5,000 per month, which may be covered by long-term care insurance.

Is assisted living covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or Long-Term Care Insurance?

You may be eligible for Medicare, Medicaid or insurance coverage of your assisted living expenses depending on your medical needs and provider’s orders. Many assisted living facilities offer the services of a social worker or advocate who help you find ways to pay for your stay.

What’s included in my monthly payment?

In most communities, your rent payment covers almost all of your daily living expenses, including:

  • Landscaping
  • Home maintenance and repair
  • Laundry services
  • A full range of activities
  • Housekeeping
  • Basic assistance with daily needs, like bathing and medications
  • Utilities, like cable TV, electricity, water, garbage and internet

Meals may be either included in your monthly fee or provided at an extra cost; each community is unique. Make sure you read the agreement in its entirety and ask questions so you fully understand which costs are included in your rent and which will result in extra charges.

What amenities can I expect?

All supportive living communities are different, but Forest Hill offers high ceilings, breathtaking views in oceanside units, chef-prepared dining options, an atrium fitness center, access to a full library and much more. Community members also enjoyed a fireside lounge, billiards, a beauty shop on site, underground parking and inviting sunroom.

Is transportation available?

Yes, transportation to appointments and other outings is provided seven days a week for your convenience. An even greater benefit is on-site access to many amenities that won’t require transportation at all.

Can I have overnight guests?

Yes, many assisted living residents host family and friends comfortably in their unit as long as they don’t exceed the allowed number of people in the unit per fire code. Forest Hill offers common areas and gathering rooms to give you the perfect setting for a family get-together, birthday party, or other gatherings during the day, too.

Do I have to give up some independence when I move into assisted living?

Many residents worry they’ll lose the ability to make choices about their home and routines when they move into assisted living. Quite the contrary, residents find they have many more choices than ever before. There are so many social activities, fitness classes, meal options and outings that you’ll be able to choose how to spend your time all the time, with a myriad of exciting choices. Additionally, you’ll set your own schedule and you’ll decide if and when you need help. Although we offer laundry and chef services, some residents choose to do their own washing and cooking.

Moving is overwhelming. Do retirement communities offer any help with that process?

This varies, but Forest Hill partners with Gentle Transitions, a well-known company who assists seniors in downsizing, packing, organizing, moving and unpacking. These move-in services are designed to ease the stress of moving into an assisted living community, allowing you to focus on what matters the most.

What if my needs change?

Whether you’re operating at your best, recovering after illness or surgery, or just needing more help with mobility, medications, and care, our team is qualified to help and our community is designed to cater to your needs. You can transition through care models without having to choose another organization and relocate.

What can I do in my spare time?

Along with all of the things you love to do now, you’ll have access to a robust calendar of life enrichment opportunities including music, dance, art, theater, shopping, movies, fitness and social activities. Many residents find that they’re better able to do things they’ve always wanted to do when they don’t have yard work and home maintenance to tie them down. As an added benefit, almost all activities are included at no cost to you (although you might spend a little money on outings).

How will I stay active at an assisted living community?

Many residents tone muscle, burn fat, reduce pain and stiffness, and increase mobility and flexibility when they move into an assisted living community. A beautiful Atrium Fitness Center with custom fitness programming, group classes, and unlimited access to equipment promote health and well-being for all.

What are my living options like?

Forest Hill residents choose from a number of different units, ranging from studio apartments to two-bedroom cottages. All are designed to offer modern, luxurious living in a peaceful, private setting and boast large bathrooms and walk-in closets for your convenience.

Will I have to rehome my pets?

No – Forest Hill treats your pets like family and believes they serve a vital role in health and well-being. With some limitations, your pets can come with you when you move to Forest Hill.

Can my family attend meetings about my living arrangements or care?

Yes, your family is encouraged to maintain an active role in your wellness as long as you’d like them involved. We find that residents have the most positive and successful transitions when their families are supportive and actively involved. Our friendly staff will ensure your family is both invited and welcomed to any care planning meetings or other discussions about your care.

How has assisted living changed over the years?

Assisted living was  largely medical industry only 10 years ago, whereas today it falls somewhere between hospital and healthcare. While we’re able to meet all your health and care needs, we also provide a luxurious, enriching experienced focused on your own comfort and adventure.
